The bike point
Drawing Module | 2023 | Sketching and un-learning
An experimental piece of work, exploring the mids of a small practicing mechanic shop and its marriage to the space around it. What its accessibly to people created and how the process of putting it on paper paved me to a path of
un-learning
My piece reflects on my perception of a small bike mechanic place. during my search of a subject through the map of Eksar i came across this place which, on the first look seems as insignificant as any other public place on a hot Mumbai afternoon but as i looked at the structure of the this temporary practice i noticed an interesting pattern.
Beside the mechanics work station was a temporary tea stall put up, a place for locals and bike riders who come there to fix their vehiclas can enjoy a refreshing beverage . what came with this tea stall was another stall of Cigarettes and pann masala which are common items that are a paired together for a comfortable pass time . The mechanic had also incorporated the tree that stood beside his shop by hanging certain parts on it, making it past of his practice.

what sparked my intrest was the ecosystem all of these astablishments created in their daily practice and vaguely creating a sort of imaginary layer that saperated the outside world from the space created. Little details such as the organised work station and tools of the mechanic, the Tiranga flag you see at the ciggret stall and the fact that a old man without a car or bike sat with the mechanic for no reason at all. All of this being a temporary structure, the large framework of little thing creaed that had sort of settled in through the many years should that even though it all could be physically vibed out in a day or two, it would take the space with it making a unforgiving void.
our module began by us sketching random places in and around Eksar road that we found appealing to the eye and told a story. With my limited sketching skills i could only do so much but it helped me open up my vision to newer ways of observing and seeing spaces not as in-built but created with context. These contexts include verity of things such as, Largely humans but also street animals, objects such as trash, plants , vehicles, ornaments , architecture , colours , emotions or light.A culmination of smaller set of things that bring life to the larger idea of space.

this concept of not just drawing building because we were supposed to as architecture students was thrown our the window as we kept of focusing and practicing the skill that is observation.

as the module progressed, the next phase asked us to create sketches based off of "actors" in a certain space. My understanding of actors was certain characters that catalysed the space around them, that had relationships with its surrounds that created a network of connections forming an area with life and personality.

a very important part of the process was un-learning perspective, which is a necessary thing to do as you practice the art of visualising a space not just in a direction or through its geometry but as a fragment of different views and perspectives. Space is unseen and seen simultaneously and needs to be really looked at without any bounds of technique.it so happened that when i had this articulation, during my culmination of my final drawing i somehow found perspective limiting while in the beginning i would thought of it as a guide and procedure for sketching a space.
